Laxá í Leirársveit

Laxá í Leirársveit lies just north of Hvalfjörður, between the towns of Akranes and Borgarnes. The lower river is crossed by Route 1 when driving from Reykjavik to Borgarnes and takes under an hour to drive to. It looks a fairly insignificant river at this point, even though it is the lower reaches. Do not be fooled!

The river’s catchment is 190 km² and it flows through lush meadow land on the southern side of Borgarfjörður. It's source is in the  Botnsheiði highlands about 25 km away to the north east. At the head of the system are three sizeable lakes, all connected, in Svínadalur, which help keep the water flowing in periods of no rainfall.

Salmon have access right up to the uppermost lake, Geitabergsvatn, thanks to improvements to the fish ladder at Eyrarfoss that were made in the 1970s. From Eyrarvatn, the lower lake, the river´s course runs for 14 km to the coast and  flows into a wide shallow lagoon where fish rely on the spring tides for the easiest access. The upper river runs through a high, narrow valley and the pools have a rocky nature. Here there are two waterfalls that drop the river onto the coastal plain where it eases its way through the lush meadows where the pools run steady and smooth and cry out for a hitch fly.

This river is just the place for employing light tackle and small flies. The best time is from mid-July to mid-August. Fishing is for 7 rods on 14 km of river, although only four rods are fished for the first couple of days. Worm fishing is allowed during the first four days of the season, after that it is fly-only throughout. There is a catch limit of four fish per rod/per day. After that a further six fish may be caught and released. Beats are normally fished by two rods, who are accompanied by a guide. The annual catch is 965 salmon and grilse.

The river claims to have one of the best lodges in the country.  There are eight twin-bedded rooms with shower and en-suite facilities.
