Laxá í Dölum

Laxá í Dölum, or Laxa í Dalir, is found at the head of the Hvammsfjörður near the village of Budarðalur. The river is 153 km from Reykjavik taking Route 1 north and then branching off onto  Route 60. The Laxá í Dölum drains an area of 256 km², which means it is a fairly large river in an area predominated by small spate rivers. The river flows out of the lake of Laxarvatn and runs a 30 km course to the sea at Hvammsfjörður. Sólheimafoss lies a few kilometres below the lake and stops fish going any further, so the fishable area is a 25 km stretch that contains 33 named pools. Despite having a lake at its head, the river is still prone to dry up in periods of little rain, but even then still manages to produce good numbers of fish.

The river takes a maximum of six rods and is divided into three, two-rod beats that rotate daily. The average catch is usually around 1,000 salmon per year, and the recent five year average is 967.

This river's character ranges from faster rocky water in the upper reaches to long, smooth-flowing stretches in the lower part. It flows through a wide, gently sloping valley of mostly rough pasture and heathland. The upper river's pools are composed of pots and glides found amongst the turbulent water flowing over a very rocky bed. The river here is between 6 and 12 m wide. This water gives way to wider pools, up to 20 m, that have a gravel bottom scattered with large stones. The current is quieter and pools have a well-defined head, middle and tail. There is a small foss about 2 m high at the first pool above the sea; this forms the first resting pool for fresh run salmon and can give very good fishing at the right phase of the tide.

A single-hand rod of 9 to 10-feet is ideal for stalking fish in the upper river and for covering the wider pools on the lower river. A double-hand rod of between 12 and 14-feet would also be suitable. Floating lines are used for most of the season and small flies in the size 14 to 6 range. Good patterns are: Black Bear, Green Butt, Black Sheep, Silver Blue, Frances, Hairy Mary and hitching tubes;  it is a good idea to include some patterns dressed on small heavier tubes in case of high water.

Fishing opens on 1 July and goes on until 25 September. The prime weeks are from the middle of July until late August, although September can be equally productive. The fish run mostly between 6 lbs and 16 lbs, but Laxá í Dölum also has a good number of salmon to over 20 lbs throughout the season. Fish are present at the start of the season and good catches of 2SW salmon may be made. The best weeks to be on the river are normally the last two weeks of July. Catch and release is encouraged and all fish over 69 cm are released.

Fishing is let by the week and a guide is compulsory, at extra cost. There is one guide with 4WD vehicle per two anglers. Anglers have the choice of going self-catering or taking full board accommodation at the river lodge, which is situated on the middle beat. Each rod has a private twin-bed room (rod-sharers share rooms) and each two rooms share an adjoining bathroom. There is a comfortable sitting room that has views over the river (some distance away), which also adjoins the dining room. The lodge also has a sauna.
